Roof Verge Repairs in Wigan

The gable edge of a roof takes direct wind and rain. Loose mortar or dry-verge components can leave tiles less secure.

Mortared edges

A thin new skin of mortar over loose old material seldom lasts. If the edge has broken away, defective mortar needs taking out and the verge rebuilding where necessary.

Dry verge

Plastic units should be held by the fixing system, not by improvised sealant. One missing cap can be local. A whole row working loose suggests the original fixing should be checked.

Useful when arranging a visit: keep one wide photograph showing the roof area as well as any close-up. A close-up on its own often hides the position of the fault.

Look at the masonry below

Cracks at the top of the gable wall or gaps behind a bargeboard can allow damp into the same area. The edge is a junction between materials, so both sides deserve a look.

Wind exposure

A gable facing open ground may weather more severely than the sheltered side of the same house. Compare both elevations rather than assuming they age at the same rate.
