Check above the covering
Rain can enter through pointing, render or a sill above the bay and appear to be a roof leak. Include the wall in the inspection.
Lead bays
Lead can split at folds or where movement has been restricted. Corners and wall upstands deserve close attention. Thick coatings over old lead may hide the shape of the original detail.
Felt and membrane bays
Edges and wall junctions remain the usual places to check first. Small roofs sometimes have tiny outlets that block quickly with leaves.
Inside the room
Staining at the ceiling edge can spread along plasterboard. Once the external source is repaired, give the lining time to dry before decorating.
If you are ready to get the roof inspected
Give the contractor the symptom rather than your diagnosis. The weather pattern and a few safe photographs can be useful.
